What cured me of my modern evangelical-fundamentalist certainty seeking?
Was it reading postmodern philosophy and critical theory? No.
It was reading the Psalms.
The expression of faith and doubt —
- of clinging to God while calling God out,
- of celebrating the God’s presence while wondering why the unrighteous prosper,
- of lament and praise
—this was my training ground for a faith seeking understanding amid the doubts and deconstructions of everyday life, amid the joys and injustice of this world.
I don’t have anything against reading postmodern philosophy and critical theory. I’ve read tons of both. And they have really helped my life of faith, and helped me read the Bible better.
But let’s keep returning to the sources material, the Psalms and of course, the Prophets.
